New Encounters 2020/21

New Encounters is for anyone who wishes to understand more fully their calling to follow Christ and to live as Christ's disciple in the world.
The programme will include structured opportunities to reflect on ourselves, on the roots of our faith, on contemporary Methodism and to explore different forms of lay and ordained ministry. It is intended to help us as participants to know ourselves better, develop a deeper relationship with God, identify our gifts and explore and develop the ways that we are serving God in the life of the church and in the wider world.

For many years, the Methodist Church has set up a number of ways of Extending Discipleship & Exploring Vocation. Over the past five years, the North East Region has offered several series of the Encounter programme. The 2020/2021 North East New Encounters Programme has been developed from this. In 2020 we are introducing a significant change in the method of working: for the first time this programme will be
largely delivered by working online through video-conferencing.

New Encounters is based on a monthly on-line meeting (on a week-night evening). We plan to complement that with two or three face-to-face meetings in the year which will take place on a Saturday, provisionally in Durham. This part will, of course, depend on the lifting of the present emergency restrictions.
The New Encounters journey will begin in early June 2020. Because the regular meetings are on-line, it is not expected to be delayed by the current emergency restrictions on people's travelling. There is clearly a Methodist focus in what is offered but the programme is open to Christians of any denomination.
